Religious folly.
Shakespeare's Sister wants to know if there's
a good reason for US to side with the reactionaries rather than the defenders of free speech?
Um, no, there isn't. It's very damned simple: Islamic fundamentalists have gotten their panties in a twist over a few cartoons that they should have simply ignored. They've whipped their public into a frenzy, as if those cartoons are somehow "attacking" Islam. Said fundamentalists are vile, as is the burning of embassies in Syria and Lebanon.
The appeasement by the Christian fundamentalists of the United States is equally vile. It's of course to be expected, as these fundamentalists desire the same ability, to provoke riots in order to destroy those to whom they are opposed (that is, rational folks like myself, Shakespeare's Sister and all the others). One fundamentalist is pretty much exactly like any other, Islamic, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, or whatever.
They're all fucking insane and insanely self-absorbed, to the point that they can't see reality for their delusions.
CNN online has a poll just now asking which is more important, "respect for religious beliefs" or freedom of expression. Thirty percent of the respondents seem to think that you shouldn't be allowed to express yourself if such an expression would show "disrespect" for religious beliefs.
Personally, I respect no religious belief, so I guess these idiots would want me to just shut up entirely.

You may get away with your disbelief, affront, and inequity under any designation you would like to define your attitude with, and to crow here and there about your rights to be so, apparently wining, and being left without harm. But when comes the day you stand in front of who created you, me, them, the universe and the whole existence, Who sent his prophet Muhammed (God's blessing and peace be upon him) as the last messenger to finish what Noah, Jesus, and other prophets he sent earlier started. Muhammed was sent to save humanity and invite the world to ALLAH, The only God, The Creator, Provider, who has all perfection, attributes, reminding them what this life is about, and what ALLAH gave us ourselves for. When that day comes and when he judges you for your "free speech", you won't dare to say one word of those "free words", and you won't have any chance to brag about your "free expression" you oppressed his chosen man and his best creations with, and no one will protect you from Allah, all what you will feel then is extreme regret.
I really do feel petty about those who do not believe in Islam, for their brain, heart, and mind corruption, and feel much sorrier for their miserable destination they will have. I feel petty for them too because of ignorance, misinforming they fall victim to by lot of media of their own.
Islam is the only religion that is continually having proofs of credibility and signs of truth. These proofs are scientific, physical, spiritual, and all kinds of proofs you may imagine.

For those who say some about freedom of speech when discussing offense against Islam or Muslims, why same persons reject same freedom of speech when denying the Holocaust, or anything related to Jews. See how fake, contrasting you and your values are?
For those who say Islam is against women, Islam is only religion treated the woman as a human being that has honorable, respected role that fits her nature, not as merchandise to be uncovered. This is something I expect many of you do not understand.
For those who say Islam is against whatever read about Islam first from its original sources and use your brain, just like many, many westerners (public, priests, and especially scientists) did and converted to Islam. Try to ask some of them why they did so if you were lucky enough to meet one. Again use your brain to understand the philosophy, explanation, sense and purpose of some things about Islam that you may see unacceptable. Don't be superficial.

It doesn't matter whether they're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or any other of the thousands of religions that have been and are now extant among the human race. A fundamentalist is a fundamentalist and this idiot is a very good example of the type.
Despite the anonymity I'll refrain from deleting the comment just so it can so serve. Although I have to say that anyone who posts such a rant and fails to sign their name to it is a coward.
Oh, and to the poster: While "petty" does indeed sum up the tone of your comment, I suspect that "pity" was the word you were going for. You missed the word, but did manage to shot the foot, I see.
