War

Remember that bunker we bombed?

On the opening day of the invasion, the United States launched a strike that was purportedly aimed at "taking out" Saddam Hussein. They had "intelligence" that he was located in a bunker on the outskirts of Baghdad. I put quotes around "intelligence" deliberately, because it seems that that bunker never existed, In an interview on the CBS Evening News tonight:

"When we came out here, the primary thing they were looking for was an underground facility, or bodies, forensics, and basically, what they saw was giant holes created. No underground facilities, no bodies," Col. Tim Madere said.

The main palace in the compound was still standing; according to Madere, anyone there would have survived.

D'oh! — Homer Simpson

The question, though, is whether this was incompetence or disinformation. My vote is for simple incompetence, the gods know that there's more than enough of that to go around in this administration. This definitely puts the term "intelligence" in a new light, at least as used by Rumsfeld.
